MATERIALS Top

The primary materials used at the CNSCS are a series of 12 textbooks entitled “The Chinese Language”.  The contents of these books are based on graduated levels of difficulty in Chinese language.  The first half of the series often relates to students’ daily life experience and the latter part introduces students to the Chinese culture and history.  

    

OBJECTIVES                                 

Oral Expression Top

The student will be able to  

Level I (vol.1-vol.3)

  • Present informal oral reports, such as the “Show and Tell” type of expression

  • Engage in simple conversation in Chinese

  • Describe a picture story in Chinese  

Level II (vol.4-vol.6)

  • Participate in group informal discussions in Chinese

  • Tell a short experience story in Chinese  

Level III (vol.7-vol.9)

  • Participate in speaking activities and appreciate some popular classic and modern children's poems

  • Recite an entire poem in Chinese

  • Participate in role-playing in Chinese

  • Participate in formal group discussions in Chinese

Level IV (vol.10-vol.12)

  • Interpret the mood and thought of some popular Chinese poems to gain a better understanding of Chinese poetry

  • Present formal oral reports in Chinese 


Listening Top

The student will be able to  

Level I

  • Respond to simple verbal questions, directions, and statements in Chinese

  • Comprehend a short story in Chinese

  • Follow and remember the sequential development of a short Chinese story

Level II

  • Listen in order to relate, compare, and apply information

  • Respond to more complicated verbal questions, directions, and statements

Level III

  • Raise pertinent questions in discussion

  • Increase ability to make inferences in Chinese

Level IV

  • Respond emotionally to poetry and prose in Chinese

  • Show skill in offering constructive criticism when reacting to reports, comments, and other activities

Reading Top

The student will be able to

Level I

  • Recognize 37 Chinese phonemes

  • Use bo ? po  ? mo ?  fo to pronounce words

  • Differentiate the four tones of Chinese phonemes

  • Associate meaning with Chinese written characters

  • Understand and state the meaning of words in context 

  • Acquire word meanings and state the main idea in paragraph  

Level II

  • Know how to use a Chinese dictionary to expand his/her vocabulary

  • State details to support the main idea of a paragraph

  • Summarize a paragraph

  • Draw a conclusion from what is read  

Level III

  • Maintain interest in wanting to expand Chinese vocabulary

  • Choose Chinese books to read that are at his/her independent reading level

  • Gain an understanding of Chinese culture through some selected Chinese classic fictions, fairy tales, and folk tales  

Level IV

  • Draw inferences after reading a selection

  • Evaluate and make a judgment on the value of what is read

  • Develop better understanding of Chinese culture and history through selected classic fictions and folk tales  

 

Writing  Top

The student will be able to  

Level   I

  • Write simple sentences

  • Write compound sentences  

Level   II

  • Write one paragraph experience stories

  • Write short greeting letters   

Level   III

  • Write an essay on a topic given by classroom teacher

  • Find information pertaining to the topic  

Level   IV

  • Prepare an outline of a written report on a Chinese article 

  • Present a brief written report  

 

Handwriting Top

The student will be able to

Level   I

  • Construct 100 Chinese characters listed in “Chinese Language”  vol. 1 to vol. 3

Level   II

  • Construct 200 Chinese characters listed in “Chinese Language” vol. 1 to vol. 6  

Level   III

  • Construct 400 Chinese characters listed in “Chinese Language” vol. 1 to vol. 9

  • Learn about the progressive changes of some Chinese characters  

Level   IV

  • Construct 600 Chinese characters listed in “Chinese Language” vol. 1 to vol. 12
